Summary: An examination of smoking behavior in the first of a four-volume series of the RAND Health Insurance Study (HIS). The measures of smoking will be used in the HIS primarily as proxy measures of future health status in tests relating generosity of health insurance to future health status. This report includes (1) a review of the way smoking has been measured by other investigators, and how its effects on health status are assessed; (2) a review of the adverse effects of smoking on future health status, and the types of changes in smoking behavior that reduce these effects; (3) a description of the HIS measures of smoking, including frequency distributions for the measures based on data collected at enrollment in the HIS; and (4) a brief overview of the hypotheses to be tested using the smoking measures. Other volumes in the series cover overweight, alcohol consumption, and exercise.
