This book, Endoscopic Spinal Surgery, deals with spinal surgery. There has been a resurgence of endoscopic spinal procedures within the last 5–10 years. This seems predominantly related to patients’ increased interest in minimally invasive procedures, an increased pressure on physicians to market their practices effectively to compete among more educated consumers, and increased pressure from fee payers who are looking for more cost effective ways to deliver spine care with improved value and clinical outcomes. Thus, it is no surprise that percutaneous endoscopic procedures have moved from the fringes into the mainstream of spine surgery in the same way as has occurred in other areas of general, orthopaedic, urological, and gynecological surgery, in which laparoscopic cholecystectomy, oophorectomy, prostatectomy and arthroscopic meniscectomy have long been well-established. This book attempts to provide the reader with a snapshot of the contemporary procedures for treating common conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine percutaneously by the use of advanced instrumentation and technologies. Furthermore, it provides the reader with a synopsis of the fundamentals of endoscopic spine surgery, by discussing its historical background, clinically relevant aspects of applied physics and optics, choice of anesthesia, indications, appropriate patient selection, and expected clinical outcomes.
